12 April 2010

Today SHEQ month programme continue with Environment awareness talk. All the staff including internship students involved in this programme. The talk have two session. Morning session was from 9.00a.m ~ 12.00p.m and for evening session was from 2.30p.m ~4.00p.m. The Morning session was about prudent development - a shared of responsibility. In developing a project, TNB will prioritize environmental aspects first. If all the environment is taken into account, then the project can proceed and for the evening session was all about environment awareness plus understand about global warming. A little info about global warming:

a)
Global Warming is defined as the increase of the average temperature on Earth. As the Earth is getting hotter, disasters like hurricanes, droughts and floods are getting more frequent.

b) Seen from space, our atmosphere is but a tiny layer of gas around a huge bulky planet. But it is this gaseous outer ring and its misleadingly called greenhouse effect that makes life on Earth possible – and that could destroy life as we know it.

c) Greenhouse gases: life givers and life takers ~ etc: Carbon dioxide is the most important man-made warming agent!!

Followed the technician to do some checking @ maintenance on transformer oil sampling. The maintenance is handle by TXM Services Sdn Bhd.

In the same way a blood test can provide a doctor with a wealth of information about their patient, taking an oil sample enables service engineers to learn a great deal about the condition of a transformer. The purpose of the oil checking is to determine the moisture in the oil, dielectric, the presence of acid and etc. Oil testing is a critical process it can be done before the transformer start-up, during a routine transformer inspection or in any circumstances indicating possibility of damage to the transformer, particularly when a protective device is triggered. To collect an oil sample a sampling valve located near the bottom of the tank is used. Transformer oil is a hygroscopic substance and must be protected from contact with moisture. It is therefore important to place the collected oil sample in a clean dry container.

Oil Treatment Guidelines

Following are the oil treatment guidelines which can prolong the life of transformer and save a company thousands of dollars:

  • Purify when the acid level is still low, i.e. <0.1>
  • Regenerate preferably from 0.1 mg KOH/g oil to avoid precipitation of sludge
  • Desludge when the acid level is >0.20 mg KOH/g oil
  • Dry-out when the solid insulation is wet >3.5 % MDW
The oil will be tested in lab and if the oil not reach the standard, normally they will do reclamation.
